Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)

The EGR system plays a role in emission reduction by recirculating certain quantities of exhaust gas to the engine intake system. The EGR Cooler cools the exhaust gas before it gets recirculated.

EGR valves over time will experience wear and tear and may fail as a result of carbon particle build up.

A problematic EGR system may cause the following issues:

  • Rough idle
  • Poor performance
  • Decreased fuel efficiency
  • Increase in emissions

It is always advised to do ‘longer trips’ in a diesel vehicle to try and prevent carbon build up. For example, highway trips rather than short, start/stop trips.
